BDCI ATTEND SMITHFIELD 150

BDCI, Butchers' & Drovers' Charitable Institution were out and about at Smithfield 150 over the August bank holiday weekend – the free 2-day festival to celebrate the market's 150th birthday. There was a real party atmosphere with many events for all the family.

BDCI also has a birthday to celebrate - 190 years of helping people who have a connection to the UK meat industry: employees, widows, dependents and other immediate family members.

Ian Kelly, BDCI Chairman, said, “It was great to be at this event to celebrate 150 years of Smithfield. We had a team talking to visitors to explain the work of BDCI. It was good to have feedback and spread the word as to how we can help those who work, or have worked in the meat industry.”

Greg Lawrence, the Chairman of Smithfield Market Tenants' Association said, “We were looking to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Victorian Market buildings with a fun, family friendly event, harking back to the old St Bartholomew's Fairs. Something that the traders and their staff could bring their families to and also something that our neighbours and Londoners generally could join in with. We did something similar for the 100th Anniversary and there are still some of us around who remember that! We were very pleased with the result and would like to thank all those who helped to make it a success by working on the event or just being there.”
